Thanks for the compiler explorer. I did some exploration, and it seem GCC 4.6.4 is unfortunately the version that generates the best code for m68k.
After than the compiler "forgets" that moving into d0 does not require compare after, or -Os start inserting branches to rts instead of returning in place :(.

With m68k on life support for gcc. Fingers crossed llvm/clang may eventually generate better code than gcc 4.6.4.
