To me the obvious advantage of having that as an external device is that you can still use the original YM, giving you six channels plus two different buzzers.
Replacing an YM by another YM is like replacing the 6502 by the 65c02 in the Oric, you get few cool new instructions, but it is still run at the same old 1mhz speed.
